Modernity is preoccupied with individual, libertarian rights (duties towards others, responsibility to do no harm, preferred legally as culpability can be prosecutes in the individual not on the community. Communitarianism: concerned with social justice rather than individual justice, socialized medicine community health is prioritized against the individual. Uk midwives and abortion: full autonomy would suggest that no one can be compelled to perform procedures against their will. Communitarianism would suggest that the public good needs full access to abortion services. Judge ruled that the interest of the community exceeded to rights of the individual: no one if forced into midwifery; therefore there was no direct violation of rights. Self-determination (autonomy) has triumphed over paternalism, all adult patients have the right to reuse treatment (ie. must consent) This includes end-of-life care -> passive euthanasia. Denting public trust in health services medical prognoses are unreliable. Uncertainty can lead to misdiagnosis and compromising of a patient"s rights.
