Ancient athens: a city state, peloponnesian war, with sparta 431-404 b. c. Athens defeated: for a time rule of thirty tyrants - democracy restored, athenian democracy. Why want a just state: an individual can"t be a fully just or moral or a fulfilled person without having a properly structured, governed society. Question about individuals shifts to society/ the state, then back to individuals. Some initial wrong answers: justice is paying back what you owe. For plato, justice people fulfilling their function in their society in the class in which they belong and more important, people from one class to another. Democracy should not allow social mobility or giving people opportunity to change their function/class. Plato is rejecting the view that the people in power should not be fighters/soldiers and rejecting those that are wealthy. He does not reject the notion that women to be leaders.
