PHI 2397 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Moral Agency, Stephen Maguire
Document Summary
Paper by stephen maguire (continued from last class) Is control an apt description: there is a strong belief that freedom from management control is impossible, the assumption: First, employee behaviour is controlled through the internalization of corporate culture. Second, self-managed work teams; the exemplars of employee autonomy in the workplace have resulted in stronger organizational control: internalization is not the same as control. First, internalization of corporate culture, i. e. , knowledge, beliefs, and values, is not the same as being controlled. In fact, we always act from an internal source. Actions are based on our desires and our desires are the synthesis of our beliefs, values, knowledge, etc. It is true that we are not entirely free from social, cultural, and historical constraints, but it does not mean that freedom and autonomy is an illusion. Self-managed work teams and autonomy: maguire argues that the claim that self-managed teams are inevitably controlling does not distinguish between autonomy supporting condition and controlling condition.
