Other infections: scarlet fever presenting a strawberry tongue. Red bumps are areas of increased vascularization. White lesions are caused by candida albicans: mumps (myxovirus) causes inflammation of parotid glands. Risk of testicular infection in adult males. Salivary gland inflammation: stones, benign tumors, or infections can block gland secretions causing them to swell, swelling usually goes down when salivation is inhibited, must determine reason for blockage. Achalasia: degeneration of esophageal ganglion and atrophy of smooth muscle. Decreased relaxation of ge sphincter after swallowing: dysphagia, vomiting, nausea, risk of pneumonia infection by aspiration of gi contents, diagnose with a barium swallow, treat with botox injection, mechanical dilation, or anticholinergic drugs.
