Rise of "sustainable development" concept: especially in the 1990s. Un: millennium development goals (2000: goals to be met by the international community as a whole. Failed states: terrorist threats, associated w/ failure of development, anti-western resentment, uneven effects of globalization. Lack of food, clean water, sanitation, etc: basic needs are not met in poverty. Disagree on how material needs should be met (i. e. about goals of development). People lack money to satisfy basic needs: often unemployed or "under-employed". Poverty = economic condition: measuring or eradicating poverty depends on cash transactions in the market-place, material, economic indicators. Solution: integrate into the global economy: will bring about maximum economic growth. Not just money but values, community ties, availability of common resources: not just an economic phenomenon. Those using traditional subsistence methods are not necessarily poor.
