Document Summary
Main points: the nervous system, neurotransmission, study of the brain (methods, major structures of the brain, subcortical structures & function, organization of the cortex. Note: the autonomic, somatic, sympathetic, and parasympathetic branches of the nervous system are all part of the pns. The central nervous system (cns) is the brain and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system (pns) is the rest of the nervous system. It gathers and sends info to and from the rest of the body. Peripheral nervous system has two different types: automatic controls self-regulated action of internal organs and glands. Parasympathetic (calming: somatic controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles. There are billions of neurons (nerve cells) throughout the body. Sensory neurons: bring information to the central nervous system. Interneurons: associate sensory and motor activity in the central nervous system. Motor neurons: send signals from the brain and spinal cord to muscles.
