Document Summary
Rem (rapid-eye movement) sleep: is when the body is extremely calm, but is internally aroused. We experience the most dreams (almost all dreams occur) The length of rem sleep increases as sleep progresses. Can lead to obesity, hypertension, suppressed immune system. Suddenly falling asleep, without warning (no stage 1) Breathing stops during sleep, up to 100 times and night. Altered, enhanced, and special states of consciousness (dreams, hypnosis, drugs) Dreams: unfolding sequences of thoughts, perceptions, images, and emotions. Have fantastic imagery, discontinuities, incongruities, that the dreamer delusion ally accepts. Dreams usually occur four or five times a night (most have negative imagery) The longest episode usually occurs during the longest rem period. Because of the presence of rem sleep in animals, and the presence of perception it seems likely. Studies have shown that blind people from birth or from an early age reveal that they can dream, based on their nonvisual senses, sound, taste, smell, and touch.
