Fred Switzer Lecture Notes – Sleep REM Sleep: • Stands for “rapid eye movement” • Is a recurring sleep stage • Stage that causes vivid dreams • “Paradoxical Sleep” – muscles are generally relaxed, but everything else is active **REM Rebound = REM sleep increases following REM sleep deprivation Some practical advice … ✓ Healthy sleepers only take 10-15 minutes to fall asleep ✓ Most people only need between 6-9 hours of sleep a night, depending on the person “Sleep debt makes you stupid” – also lazy, crazy, fat, sick, and dangerous Effects of Sleep Loss: o Fatigue o Impaired Concentration o Immune Suppression o Irritability o Reduced Cognitive Control o Weight Gain o Slowed Performance (increases plane, auto, truck, etc. accidents too) Sleep Disorders: - Insomnia = persistent problems in falling or staying asleep Things that Help: strict sleep routine, dark room, regular exercise, stress reduction, etc. - Narcolepsy = uncontrollable sleep attacks - Sleep Apnea = cessation of breathing, often associated with snoring, repeatedly awakes sufferer, but treatable with a CPAP machine (Continuous Positiv
