It then uses this information to send out messages to muscles and glands; that is how it directs and controls human behaviour. The nervous system is also responsible for our consciousness and our conscious experiences. Ii) neurons: basic function and structure of neurons. There are three types of neurons which correspond with certain functions. Sensory neurons: picks up information from sensory organs and sends it to the central nervous system via nerves. Motor neurons: carries out messages from central nervous system to the muscles neurons and organizes and integrates the information. They are responsible for the most complex tasks, and number in the billions.
