When a specific stimulus is present, instincts kick in: drives and incentives. Basic innate needs, when they are not met it creates a state of tension and we are motivated to reduce it by going out and meeting our needs. External stimuli that are attracted to us that we want to achieve: arousal theory. Optimal level of arousal is what we want to maintain. If decreased, we are motivated to increase arousal level. If increased too much, we feel nervous or tense: a hierarchy of motives (maslow) Stomach if empty it is liked and associated with feeling of hunger. If full, we can still eat and feel hunger. If stomach is removed, people continue to feel hungry and are motivated to eat. Hormones: regulate feelings of hunger and eating behaviours. The brain has a weight range that it favours and prefers.
