Document Summary

Freud"s approach on human nature was very negative; according to freud, if humans were left to manage on their own, they would probably destroy each other. Conscious mind . vs. unconscious mind; something that is unreachable that affects us from behind. The merger of these three leads to an interesting result. Freud is alluding to an iceberg showing the personality structures: the conscious represents only a little bit of super-ego and ego. The sub-conscious is the same but submerged deeper in the mind, and unconscious there is a lot of the ice berg that is not seen; it"s there, but unreachable. It seeks immediate tension reduction of biological processes(i want, i want, i want, etc ) Acts as an intermediary between the id and the external world. Later, acts as a mediator between the id and superego. It represents the morals and standards of society. Id and superego are two extremes and the ego is placed in the middle.
