Stress and stressors: def: the process that is both psychological and biological, includes a negative emotional reaction we have in a situation that is perceived as threatening and beyond coping with. Canon- 1 of the first to study stress (arousal: bodies of humans and animals- change in physiology when stress, epinephrine and norepinephrine are released- arouse nervous system. Purpose: to allow the body to fight or flight. Selye: canadian, 40 years of research, used stress 1st, stress is in medicine, general adaptation syndrome (gas) Alarm: come face to face with stress situation. Resistance: coping with the situation or resist which makes you more vulnerable to pain. Exhaustion: body can no longer fight, depleted supplies- serious risk of diseases and death. Adrenal glands: on top of kidneys- release hormones in the body. Short term: stress hormones are healthy and essential for survival. Long term: toxic- cortisol kills neurons in the brain.
