Theory of mind: wrap up, cognitive development preoperational thinking. Focused on sensory and motor thinking with senses. Start with reflexes, organize into more complex behaviours. By end of stage, develop mental representation: object permanence, memory of kicking mobile as a baby. What"s happening in the preoperational stage? (ages 2 to 7 years) Development of symbolic representation: use of one thing to stand for another (e. g. symbols can include objects, words, gesture, pictures, sounds) Very important to development: drawing, language. One thing can represent another (little room and big room) Scale model task: big snoopy/ little snoopy experiment. Hide big and little snoopy in same location. Full size troll hidden in full size room. Children shown model room and asked to find the troll. Piaget limitations in thinking: centration, appearance vs reality, egocentrism, centration. Tendency to focus on a single perceptually striking feature of an object or event. Tested with conservation tasks: 5yo can"t pass test but 7yo can pass it.
