Document Summary

All types of drugs but we will be talking about the psychopharmacological drugs that impact our brain and behaviour. We must get the drug into our brain, there are many ways but the most common way is by mouth. Inhalation and needles are much quicker to get it to the brain. Drugs that are weak acids, that have to go through the stomach. Coating of the brain that protect it from toxins and many other types of molecules. Take in account we must take it from the blood-brain barrier. The brain capillaries do not leak and have tight junctions from the astrocytes (formed with capillaries). Only certain things can go past, i. e. co2 both small molecules and uncharged ions. Other things such as glucose and amino acids can cross over, but require energy and active transport. Things that are not charged cannot pass so easily. Can get other substances through, but must be transported through active energy such as atp.
