Review from last week there are 4 steps of neurotransmission. It isn"t because you have more than one neurotransmitter that produces certain behaviours, it is more sytems and mechanisms: ach in the heart reduces the heart rate but contracts skeletal muscles. 3 classes of neurotransmitter small molecule, peptide gases and Gaba is the inhibitory neurotransmitter and it inhibits the hippocampus and glutamate receptors. Glycine is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brainstem and spinal cord. Ach synthesis and breakdown of ach: important enzyme reaction that happens within the presynaptic button choline and acetate, they are derivatives of the breakdown of the products we eat. The byproducts can react with the help of acetyl coenzyme a and choline acetyltransferase the enzyme that breaksdown ach is (on the slide) Amino acid transmitters: glutamate is the main excitatory transmitter, gaba is the main inhibitory transmitter, gaba is formed by a simple mofidication of glutamate molecule.
