Many ppl fear death less than the dying. Modern hospital is geared primarily as an intensive care - tertiary. Costs have tripled and this has brought about the advent of hospice. Costs have called into question: o o o. Balance btwn extension of, and quality of life (issues of choice) Confronting death puts one in touch w life. Knowledge that hospitals are not best place to die. Costs are high, hospice is better and less expensive. Knowledge of ethics behind care, resources and demand upon system. Personal reasons, ones feelings, understanding the greiving process, appreication for all life. Y helps to survive the process of grief. Y appreciation of others and one"s own life (precarious and precious) Y insights into unfinished business (guilt and shame) Y consensus as to the value of human life. Y quality of life and right to (grieving room) Y underlying principles of war (threat of annihilation) More usual definition is one of appropriate death.
