A family where the kids are related to one parent but not the other. Simple stepfamily; all kids related to one parent, not the other. Number of simple stepfamilies is decreasing because simple is increasing. Until end of ww2, most remarriages followed death of a spouse, now more so because divorce. Complex factors underlie shift from remarriage after widowhood to remarriage after divorce. Greater acceptance for common law unions and single living. Fewer people who divorce will chose to remarry. 2006; 26% of women and 37% of men entered into conjugal relationship within 3 years of divorce. Within 20 years, 69% of women and 82% of men had formed new unions. 3 stages in entering and adapting to second marriage. Main difference between first and second marriage is boundaries. Challenges for stepfamilies; many candidates for available roles. For kids, they face a loss of accustomed roles.
