Mood disorders are like the common cold of psychology they are very common. Mood swings are normal, but when they are more extreme it is not: must look at the extent, severity and duration of the symptoms to diagnose a mood disorder. Depression symptoms weight loss, sadness, lack of concentration, withdrawal, lack of functioning, lonely, tired and suicidal thoughts. Depression comes in many forms and can be di cult to diagnose when symptoms aren"t consistent. Psychotic depression depression + delusions: this term is less common now, will be called severe depression. Bipolar disorder mood swing disorder: looks like a depressed patient but will have manic moments, di erent types of manic. When these factors surpass the threshold, depression occurs. Treatment: depression drugs (tricyclic, mao inhibitors-these have severe symptoms though) or electric compulsion therapy (ect, bipolar drugs (lithium) and social groups. Many people have di erent symptoms and respond to treatment di erently.
