Not all memories pass successfully through these stages and problems may occur at each stage. So memories can be unreliable and incorrect, can have serious consequences. Two types of memory retrieval that eyewitnesses perform: Reporting details of a previously witnessed event/person. Determining whether what is currently being viewed/heard is the same as the previously witnessed item/person. Ex: exam- multiple choice= recognition memory, short answer= recall memory. Media influence, when you confuse what was actual heard with what you think you heard- retroactive memory falsification. Eyewitness issues can be studied using a variety of methods: Meta analysis, get it from police reports, court and trial transcripts. Universities with labs and cameras, actual lab. Two types of independent variables in eyewitness research: Present at the time of the crime and cannot be changed (e. g. , age of witness)
