More than 450 000 000 individuals world wide have mental health disorders. Approximately
1/3 in Canada, meaning that everyone is effected.
Cost of mental disorders in Canada (2013): 63 billion a year. (Absenteeism, unemployment, and
underemployment, health care service costs, premature death.)
Why do we need mental health professionals?
• prevention
• lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, excursive and diet associated with
many illnesses
• mental health professionals can play a role in perception of physical illnesses
Increasing access to psychological services to save taxpayer money.
The depression report (2006, UK): 1 in 3 families affected by depression, 2% of expenditures of
health system is devoted to depression, 1% of national income lost due to depression and
anxiety. One million people are on disability due to depression and receive 750 pounds a
month. Psychological treatments that cost about 750 pounds help at least half the people
suffering from anxiety and depression. Therefor, government committed to increasing access to
psychological services.
