Nature of listening: hearing and listening are not the same, process of listening; selecting, understanding, remembering, responding. Getting the most out of listening: listening to sustain or improve relationships. Empathic listening: supportive and intuitive, accepting, sensing and feeling with the speaker, non evaluative and non directive. What are the characteristic of language: language is symbolic, language is rule bound, language is culture bound, language is dynamic. We cannot explain logically why a dos is a dog or why a table is a table, or the need for food is called hunger. Phonological rules: rules governing how sounds combine to form words: Syntactic rules: rules governing how we arrange words and function or other symbols. Semantic rules: rules concerning the agreed upon shared meanings of words which can vary over time, across cultures, and according to personal experience. Pragmatic rules: rules that take context into account in arriving at meaning.
