Active neglect: financial exploitation or withholding medicine, food, or assistance. Abuse is confined to poor, minority, or immigrant families. Alcohol and drugs are the real causes of violence in the home (they are stressors). Children who are abused grow up to be abusers. Chronological aging: how many years a person has lived. Psychological aging: cognitive, intellectual, and emotional changes. Social aging: how others (including societies) treat people of different ages. Functional aging: combination of the physical, intellectual, and social capacities and accomplishments. Aging is associated with less gender differentiations and more similarity in definitions of masculinity and femininity. Retirement may be the greatest change in the male gender role. Aging is often associated with a decline (physical or mental) in one or both spouses. Prime of life vs. great stress and depression. Loss of reproductive capacities (harder on women than men). Midlife crisis amongst men; this is not universal or increased alienation.
