Gender identity is developed in stages through experiences in infancy, as propelled by body. Believed that the stages were passed through by having identity crisis. Critical moments in which boys (masculine) and girls (feminine) are separated from their gender identity. Want to appear as though a boys transition is dramatic and traumatic. Appears as though their transition is smooth. Girls have easier time, don"t have to fight anything. Babies: do whatever they want/need to do as they please. Doesn"t go farther than limiting your selfishness. Does not provide societal standards or reason why not to do things. Provides the societal standards in which we should abide by. Social environment provides us opportunities for personal gratification. Ie: wanting food providing us with places to get food so we don"t steal from other people. Most important because then the genders divide. Feel like they"re in competition with their father. Tries to be friends with his father.
