SOC 2112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Act Naturally, Online Dating Service, Predicable
Document Summary
Weber - sociology is the interpretive understanding of social action. The 3 premises of symbolic interactionism: 1. Human beings act towards things/situations/people on the basis of meanings that they have for them i. e. things that exist in the world outside of us: 2. The meaning of such is derived from (or arises out of) the social interactions one has with other people i. e. what"s considered appropriate behaviour and what"s not. Ex: classroom setting - i"m the student and there"s a prof (we each have our roles as to how we need to behave: 3. These meanings are modified through (mediated) an interpretive process used by the persons in dealing with the thing encountered. Ex: lecture in a classroom (meaning) can be modified - figure out what"s going on/establish the meaning of the situation. Meaning isn"t set in stone, it is co-created among two people and is agreed upon.
