SOC 2112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Online Dating Service, Erving Goffman, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
1- human beings act towards things, situations, and people on the basis of the meanings that they have for them. In other words, we orientate our behavior towards people, events, and things based on the meanings/what those things/events/people have for us. There is a process of meaning and a process of interpretation at work. It"s about things that exist outside of us/things that are not me". 2 the meaning of such is derived from (or arises out of) the social interactions one has with other people. The meaning is created as a result of interactive processes between you ad another person. This allows for a certain degree of flexibility. It is agreed upon (what is exactly happening here), and how you are expected to behave/what is considered appropriate behavior/meaning is derived from interactions. Ex, if professor acted outside of his professor role the meaning of the interaction (such as at a bar) has a different meaning.
