Document Summary

Lecture 2: recap - evolution - what causes. Diversity: sciences progress through testable predictions, descent with modification by natural selection explains adaptations and diversity. Science strives to be objective: jane goodall - 1934, birute galdikas 1946 arangatang, dian fossey gorillas. The idea of change over time was not new: erasmus darwin. One of first to see that species really change. No why or how they might change: jean-baptiste de lamarck. Went one step further than erasmus and suggested mechanisms. Example: neck of giraffe, once feed on lower branches have to stretch and go to higher and higher branches. No evidence for characteristics appearing/disappearing by use or disuse. Example: take giraffes, 2 groups, one with regular height, and one with leg height, then you"d see neck lengths shrink. Example: long neck giraffes, will pass them along. Example to test: same experiment as the one done, but look at next generation. Their offspring should have longer or shorter necks.
