Document Summary

H&h"s pivotal studies provided avenues for understanding other aspects of the action potential. To understand what defines when you get action potential in neuron - surface of neuron receives information via receptors. Signals create a graded potential which then creates an action potential - then creates synaptic potential. Important for neurons to know when to fire action potential. Neuron - axon with dendrites - there is sharp intracellular electrode, recording the voltage of the postsynaptic neuron. A synapse releases nt to evoke an excitatory synaptic potential (epsp) - triggers opening of postsynaptic ion potential. Synaptic potential have to work through dendrite to generate action potential. By the time the graded epsp reaches the axon, it is below threshold. So many charges diluted out by capacitance - too low to generate action potential. By the time this epsp reaches the axon, it is above the action potential threshold so it causes an action potential.
