Document Summary

This lecture was about understanding neuron shape and structure. We are going to think about historical observations, specifically a researcher, ramon y cajal, who introduced the neuron doctrine then golgi- labelling neurons, advances in neuronal tracing. They influenced generations of scientists: early inroads into understanding the nervous system. We didn"t always know that neurons are cells. Based on combined observations by numerous scientists. A camp of researchers referred to the nervous system as a reticulum (not cellular)- a nervous system is made up of a single contiguous network of cytoplasm, not separate cells. This shows that they wanted to show neural transmission. This kind of violates cell theory: camillo golgi (found the golgi apparatus) (and joseph von gerwas) was a strong proponent of this theory and he invented reazione nera, the black reaction or the golgi stain. It randomly labels some neurons in the tissue but not all of them.
