Document Summary
Topic: principles of composition and the writing process. Due jan 26 (first five minutes of tutorial) Last week refer to jan 12 (lecture 2) How meaning is encoded and decoded (stuart hall) Shannon weaver model broke communication down into component section. Cons: it assumes communication happens in one direction, the receiver is quite passive. (also for lasswell"s model) It is not a simple situation of encoding correctly and decoding correctly. Dependent on skills and backgrounds of the centre and the receiver. Meaning is more complex, it makes meaning more complex. Encoding: the way you present the message. The affordances of technology itself it apart of the encoding process. Every choice you make when you encode includes intentionality. The decoder has to use their beliefs and technology to understand what is being said. Only when the message has being meaningfully decoded is communication taking place. You produce your own stuff as you decode it. An image is a text, in communications.
