Effects of the metropolis on mental life - georg simmel (1903) Society doesn"t exist physically, but through interactions between individuals and groups. The function of society affects the fate and development. Individual then gives up some control of themselves. Sensory overload - agglomerated by many things, occupied spaces. Social competition, division of labour - specialization of job and competing with others to be the best and differentiate with others. Dominance of money economy - reduces social relations down to exchange of resources. Blas attitude (key protection mechanism) - ignore others e. g. homeless people.
