o Aggressive

Libido refers to pleasure-seeking and sensuality as well as intercourse desire
Libido follows a developmental course during childhood

Each stage has a conflict which needs to be resolved properly – if they are not
dealt with then you cannot develop your personality
o Fixed progression of change from stage to stage
o Notion of fixation at a particular

Oral retentive personality – when babies do not get enough stimulation in the oral
stage
o Anal : 2-3 years
Toilet training – is the child confident enough to take care of their own waste
Relationship between parent and child
If they are not toilet trained – they are lacking accomplishment
Unstimulating leads to anal retentive – if anal stage is not resolved properly,
chid will not have order or cleanliness in their habits
In adult life, you are extremely orderly (keeping towels straight,
organized) and neat
Anal expressive personality is late, lazy and unorganized
o Phallic : 4-6 years
Stimulation of genital – kids touching themselves where they feel good
Bos at to arr their other, girls at to arr their dad (Oedipus
complex with parental identification)
Women have penis envy – women want to be men because they are second
class citizens
Repress penis envy, electric conflict, etc.
o Latency : 7-11 years
Sublimation of sexual and aggressive urges
o Genital : 12+ years
Mature sexuality and relationships
Ego Defense Mechanisms
o Defense mechanisms are unconscious mental processes that protect the conscious
person from anxiety
Repression: anxiety-evoking thoughts are kept unconscious
Ex. Childhood sexual abuse – the dot hae eories ad is either
incestualized, families or friends
o When memories are damaging, people often repress their
memories which ends up coming out as depression, addiction,
etc. in adulthood
Denial: person refuses to recognize reality
We are in denial without ever being aware of it – protects our egos from
anxiety by lying to ourselves and misconstruing reality
Egos defese mechanism
Projection: person attributes their own unacceptable impulses to others
Putting own feelings, expression onto others – taking out feelings, being
mean when your hurt, etc.
Reaction Formation: person converts an unacceptable impulse into the opposite
impulse

Little 5 year old boy has crush on little girl – in that age they have
mentality that girls are gross, so he teases her instead of being
affectionate
Some people who are homophobic, may be gay themselves, just afraid
to admit it
Sublimation: person converts an unacceptable impulse into a socially acceptable
activity
Ex. Breaking up with girlfriend and writing a song about it
Rationalization: person explains away their actions to reduce anxiety

Displacement: diverting emotional feelings from their original source to a
substitute target
