Current research focusing on trait theory personality: enduring patterns of thought, feeling, motivation, behaviour expressed in different circumstances. Thought unconscious influences our behaviour heavily (wishes, fears, memories, emotions) Argued for 3 levels of consciousness, conflict occurs between the different aspects of consciousness (id, ego, superego), iceberg analogy. Repress uncomfortable anxiety, when comes out, cause neurosis. Id is the basic, unconscious animalistic human nature; selfish, pleasure- seeking, avoid pain. Ego is our sense of self, based on reality principle. Ego starts to develop around 2, superego around 5. Superego unconscious, negotiates with the ego, doesn"t communicate with the id. Ego can dream because id doesn"t know difference. Human behaviour motivated by sex and aggression libido: pleasure-seeking and sensuality as well as desire for intercourse. Developed during childhood, stages to progress during with crises to resolve. If not resolved, because fixated, not have full libido during adulthood.
