Document Summary

A research strategy which attempts to gain a close and intimate familiarity of a social group and/or social activity. Eg. high school boys - creative assessment, surfers and surfing. Central methodological problem: balancing subjectivity and objectivity. Objectivity - testable, verifiable, has to do with phenomenological experience. Good because can allow for raw data via interviews. Ex. camera picks up what is there and no personal experience is noted - more first hand data. Subjectivity - interpretation which will vary based on person and state of mind/experiences (bias and personal experience - suppressed in scientific research) Field notes - see based on interpreters experience. Researchers emotion are a form of data itself - more informative info than a video. Trying to get understanding of subject from view of people in study and also considering other characteristics (such as ethnicity, age group, gender, etc) There are natural forces in our everyday life - there are things naturally embedded into our lives.
