It"s related to history, geography, travel writing, philosophy. Victorian anthropology (early 20th century) -> influenced by darwin (origin of species) he defined culture in a way that it linked to victorian ideal civilization. Some people had more evolved culture than others. All cultures could be ranked according to him from least to most civilized (influenced by darwin).
