ANTA02H3 Lecture 7: Crystallization
Document Summary
Women"s fat bodies crystallize cultural logics in terms of a caste society, herding, trade, cultural values (gender complementarity, endogamy), etc. Become something that is greater than the sum of its parts and is visible (fleshy, fat, plump) cultural values become infused in each other than they reinforce and sustain each other. Fat bodies are beautiful because they are closed and still . Different from men"s bodies crystallization came from susan bordo (america philosopher) when writing about the thin. Standard of beauty that is fit , slim . We take for granted the beauty of slimness that it is good, healthy, and sexy. Our obsession with slimness is the same fatness for azawagh arabs. It is common to blame thinness on media or fashion agencies. Our culture is media-rich and ubiquitous, but we don"t question the beauty of thin images. Media speaks our language because the ideas that are crystallized in these image portray our cultural values and logics.
