Document Summary
Glucose can be broken down in the absence of oxygen by fermentation, producing a small amount of atp. Metabolic pathways are integrated allowing control of the energy level of cells. In the absence of oxygen, glucose is broken down by fermentation. Lactic acid fermentation occurs in animals and bacteria. electrons from nadh are transferred to pyruvate to produce lactic acid and nad+. Pyruvate releases carbon dioxide to form acetaldehyde, and electrons from nadh are transferred to acetaldehyde to produce ethanol and nad+. Before the presence of atmospheric oxygen, organisms likely used one of the fermentation pathways to generate the atp needed for cellular processes. Cellular respiration can occur in the absence of oxygen, but needs a final electron acceptor such as nitrate or sulfate. Anaerobic respiration evolved before aerobic respiration (which required free oxygen not available on primitive earth) Aerobic organisms harness more energy from organic molecules to power the work of the cell.
