Poikilothermy and homeothermy form a continuum in which poikilothermic animals have their body temperature fluctuate with the environmental temperature (poikilotherms) or remain constant (homeotherms). Ectothermy and endothermy form a continuum in which ectothermic animals derive their body heat from the environment while endothermic animals produce their own heat metabolically. In most situations, poikilothermy and ectothermy occur together while homeothermy and endothermy occur together. For example, a deep sea benthic fish is a homeotherm because its body temperature always remains constant. However, the only reason its body temperature remains constant is because the temperature of its environment (deep sea) never changes. It is also an ectotherm because whatever body heat it has comes from its environment. Poikilothermy indicates that body temperature fluctuates with the environmental temperature and ectothermy indicates that an animal"s heat is derived from its environment. The bork (pagothenia borchgrevinki) is an antarctic ice-fish that lives at a normal temperature of approximately 2 c.
