Document Summary

Lecture 20 november 17 energy flow and food webs. Raymond lindeman created a way to represent the transfer of energy in an ecosystem. Ecological roles are determined by their trophic interactions which shows what they eat and what eats them and this determines the influence of an organism on the movement of energy and nutrients through an ecosystem. Trophic levels describe the feeding positions of groups of organisms in ecosystems. The first level has autotrophs and each tropic level is based on the number of feeding steps by which it is separated from autotrophs. All organisms are either consumed or enter a pool of dead organic matter (detritus). Dead organisms and poop are consumed by detritivores (mainly bacteria and fungi) in a process called decomposition. Detritus is considered part of the 1st trophic level, and detritivores are part of the 2nd level. Only a small amount of biomass is consumed then most of the energy flow goes through the detritus.
