Many interactions-> mutual benefit-> species benefit from one another. 1st farmers of earth= ants (fungus-growing ants)-> farm fungus. Collect bits of leaves + bring them back as food for the fungus. And the fungi grow specialized structures, which provide food for the ants. When new queen establishes a new colony-> takes a bit of fungus w/her to start the colony. Colonies can be massive-> full of fungal gardens & support millions of ants. These are pics of chambers in the ground. Large chambers-> garbage dumps (most important job of ants, beyond feeding the fungi, is keeping them clean-> so they take away disease bits of fungi and put them in this garbage chamber) So not only benefits-> but benefits outweigh the costs. Symbiosis can also mean something negative-> just (cid:373)ea(cid:374)s there"s a (cid:272)lose asso(cid:272)iatio(cid:374) (cid:271)/(cid:449) 2 spe(cid:272)ies. Switching from diff types of relationships-> can be very minor.
