BIOB50H3 Lecture 1: BIOB50 Lecture 1
Document Summary
What a lot of people tend to picture is eco-friendly ideas. Many times these have to do more with environmentalism rather than ecology. Advertisements often try to use ecological terms to seem more natural/environmentally friendly. This is called greenwashing, and this is becoming more and more pervasive. When you do science, you cannot remove your bias. It is important to differentiate the motivation with which people are talking about environment. That is the study of the natural and unnatural components of natures (abiotic stuff). Ecology are more interested in the biological ramifications. Ecology is the study of the distribution and abundance of organisms: the interactions among organisms, the interactions between organisms and their non-living environment. Current understanding: events in nature are interconnected. Life would not exist without interactions between living tings: ecological interactions are complex, we can never account for all factors in nature, it can be difficult to predict the outcomes of ecological events and interactions.
