BIOC14H3 Lecture 8: BIOC14 : Lecture 8 : Inheritance of Complex Traits
Document Summary
Bioc14 : lec 8 : inheritance of complex traits. Genotype effects (nature) + environmental effects (nurture) which is more important and how to estimate the relative contributions of genes & environmental factors. Contribution of gene or environment depends on the trait that we"re interested in. Qualitative traits that are influenced by single genes, environmental contribution is quite low (if you have the gene, you tend to get the trait/disorder) Quantitative traits (usu. polygenic) that vary along a continuous dimension, you have much larger enviro contribution (depending on trait/disorder, the effects are greater/less) To determine what portion of variation is due to genes/enviro = use statistics = quantitative genetics. Heritability: gene-enviro contribution rather than something will be passed on from generation to generation. To understand how much variation in a population is due to genetic variation, have to understand concept of variance.
