Females can afford to be choosy because there"s a lot of males out there viable for them to mate with. For males there aren"t always females out there at a specific time to mate with. Females can afford to be choosy ; how they choose males depends on needs of females in that species. Lots of birds ; males offer females food which help courting behaviour; if he courts her she"s more likely to mate with him: coevolution of nuptial gifts and flight. Females chose males based on what they need. Lineages of fireflies, some of them are flightless some fireflies can fly (females ) For flightless females it coevolved with males no longer providing females with nuptial gifts.
