The only way to defeat this monster was to sacrifice a young maiden. Laomedon again refuses to pay and hercules kills him and puts priam on the throne. This is why during the trojan war poseidon favors the greeks but not apollo because the greeks took one of his priests as a prize and refused to let go. Prophecy is that the son born from her will be greater than his father so the gods marry her off to a mortal. Zeus is so thrilled that he avoided this fate, the gods throw a really big wedding and all the gods are invited except eris. In retaliation, intending to cause discord she takes a golden apple and writes on it for the fairest and she throws it into the wedding. Hera, athena and aphrodite fight over this apple because they think they deserve it. Zeus knows better than to judge this contest.
