Prof: We got some unfinished business last week. I just want to finish off on what happened in
the red sea.
Cenozoic tectonic setting of the Arabian Plate
- NAF= North Anatolian fault
- DST = Dead Sea transform
- EAF = East Anatolian fault
- There is a very rich record from writings and buildings that have collapsed by looking at
the impacts of earthquakes on cultures
- What mountain do we find to the west?

- To leap ahead to next week, the Mediterranean Sea is a remnant of a much larger ocean
that was caught between Africa and Europe. We’ll look at that next week
Dead Sea Rift: 420 m below sea level

- A famous pull apart is the Death Valley
- Why is it called the Death Valley, Dead Sea?
o Salt. There’s not much living there. It’s very dry.
- Death Valley is 420 m below sea level all because of salt
Petra, Jordan
- What does the name Petra come from?
o A rock
- There was the treasury at Petra
- The effects of the 363 AD major earthquake at Petra effectively ended the use of the city
Crusaders Fortress of Ateret on the Jordan River: Built on the plate boundary
- Earthquakes of 1202 and 1759 moved it 2.1 m North
- 2010 earthquake in Japan that we’ll look at next week moved 40 m with just one
earthquake
