This is the basic principle of earth"s history, but it is a bit ironic because you explain earth history in terms of what oceans are doing. Sometimes called actualism" (same meaning present is the guide to the past: there are some exceptions to actualism; this process is important to the evolution of the planet but we have not seen ourselves meteorite impacts. These huge impacts have profoundly changed the history of life on the planet and some people argue that some of these supercontinents break up when large meteorite impact occurs. We only know meteorite impacts occur because we have looked at ancient rocks: there have been different schools of thought that have said there have been catastrophic events, ex. There is a strange phenomenon called cascading earthquakes where the positions of the earthquakes get closer and closer to the city.
