EESA10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Radon, Environmental Health, Osteoporosis
Document Summary
Children are generally more vulnerable to different chemicals and toxicants: different exposure patterns between children and adults. When talking about children"s environmental health, there are different exposure patterns between children and adults which makes children more vulnerable. This may be due to limited diet of children, behavior unique to children, how and where children spend their time, and the impact of short stature. Limited diet of children- children rely on generally fewer types of food in their diet than adults. For example, for an infant, the exclusive way of getting the essential nutrients is through mother"s breast milk. If the mother"s milk is contaminated with dioxin or ddt, then the infant is exposed o that contaminant. Another issue is that babies consume more food in proportion to their body size than adults; they also drink more water relative to their body weight. If these foods and drinks are contaminated, children will be exposed to contaminants in much higher concentrations.
