Ekphrasis - the representation of one artistic medium in another form. A piece of art = visual medium. Embellished urns is the focus of this poem. Sylvan imagery: sylvan = of the forest. A historical forest, represented as having classical antecedents of interconnection in the forms of nature, such as nymphs and dryads who became trees and water. ->men, gods, maidens, boughs, timbrels and pipes are examples found in this poem. History of the ode - originated in ancient greece and rome. Diction: the kinds of words, phrases, sentence structures, and figurative language. ->diction is format in this ode (and appears in text as educated) Complex stanzaic structure w/ three reflective aspects (remember order*)- Ode presents the reader with series of meditations. Meditations present, and perhaps polarize two opposite sides of a quandary. Two sides of an issue in perspective. Strophe, antistrophe, resolution of two sides and epode.
