The word comics has a bit of a negative connotation, and are the cousins of the graphic novel; this does not mean that comics are in any way a lesser form of literature. But to understand the graphic novel, you have to understand comics. Sequential art: form with ancient roots that starts to resemble what we understand to be comics in the early 20th century. William hogarth"s a harlot"s progress shows how far comics have come, and how easy it is to read comics today. Tells history of william the conqueror, who invaded and took over england for many years. Comes from a culture similar to the aztecs. Tells the story of a warrior who faces many trials to become the king. Codex: unlike a scroll, it is a long folded piece of paper (like an accordion) Six huge engravings meant to be seen side by side to get the story.
