Document Summary

Read call it sleep until the end of the first book - the cellar . Micro-composition: we see the immigrant experience entirely from the child"s perspective. A romantic novel usually ends with a happily every after" - the lovers are married. This technically happens with ntonia, but not with jim; ntonia has a large, happy family. Although the novel is future oriented it still looks towards the past and what jim has lost. Peter - has a domestic side; wishes for a daughter; but because of his past he can never marry and must remain a solitary bachelors. Men who fear women & their fertility: Otto - looks after another man"s life and their kids; a little embarrassment because there"s so many kids that he"s not related to. Men who leave women in the lurch: Larry donovan - leaves ntonia even though she"s pregnant. Mr. shimerda - married his wife because he got her pregnant.
