Document Summary

Ireland is referred to as motherland so immigrants can be seen as orphans leaving their roots behind. Catholicism = seen as a surrogate mother. The fact that he pursues her despite her rejection means religion may not be so important to him as it is to her. Bessy conway & bridget, sally, fanny, onny, mary murphy, becky. Sally is a character who is disobedient doesn"t go to church; a very strong contrast to bessy. Every one of these girls appear to be bad except for bessy. She would not have fallen for this guy if he back home he also neglects the work ethic he spends his time consuming expensive rings, etc. Becky seems to be an american version of bessy (maybe that"s why their names are similar: one thing they don"t have in common: Family approves of ally"s marriage but not mary due to class issue.
